Sapanca

Sapanca is Istanbul's countryside — close enough for a same-day drive, remote enough to feel you've crossed into another world. The lake is ringed with boutique hotels on wooden stilts, traditional trout restaurants, and horse-riding ranches. Up in the hills of Maşukiye and Kartepe, waterfalls crash through pine forests and, in winter, Turkey's most accessible ski slopes take over. Three to four days is enough to unwind; combine with Istanbul for a classic 7-day lake & city trip.

Highlights

What you'll see

Sapanca Lake

Electric boat rides, lakeside cafés and a 42-km shoreline drive wrapped in forest. Sunset from a deck here is the trip's signature moment.

Maşukiye Village

Trout restaurants built directly over rushing mountain streams. Bread hot from the oven, fresh fish on the grill, kids feeding ducks in the water.

Kartepe Resort

In winter: ski runs for beginners and intermediates, cable car to the summit. In summer: mountain hikes with views to the Sea of Marmara.

Sudüşen Waterfall

A short forest hike ends at a 38-metre cascade. Picnic tables, horse-riding trails, and swing seats over the water.

Thermal Spas

The Sakarya region sits on a band of mineral-rich hot springs. Day spas and overnight thermal resorts — Ottoman wellness tradition.

Horse & ATV Ranches

Guided horse rides through the pine valleys or ATV tours over forest trails — a unique family activity Istanbul can't offer.
