Cappadocia

Three million years of volcanic ash and wind have carved central Anatolia into an open-air gallery: fairy-chimney cones, pigeon-house cliffs, and tuff-stone valleys in every shade of pink, ochre and rose. Beneath it all, early Christians carved entire cities underground — some still walkable today — and cliff-face monasteries with frescoed chapels. The best way to take it in is still from a wicker basket floating at sunrise. Three nights is the minimum to catch a balloon flight (weather-dependent) plus the main valleys; four is comfortable.

Highlights

What you'll see

Sunrise Balloon Flight

60–90 minutes adrift over fairy chimneys with 100+ balloons around you. The bucket-list photo of a lifetime — champagne & flight certificate included.

Göreme Open-Air Museum

UNESCO site of Byzantine rock-cut chapels with 11th-century frescoes. The Dark Church alone is worth the trip.

Derinkuyu Underground City

Eight levels deep, home to 20,000 people, carved in the Byzantine era. Full ventilation, church, stables and wells — still passable today.

Uçhisar Castle

The highest point in Cappadocia — a single giant fairy chimney hollowed into a fortress with 360° valley views at sunset.

Ihlara Valley Hike

A 14-km green canyon cut by the Melendiz River — Byzantine chapels carved into the cliffs, shaded poplars, lunch by the stream.

Cave Hotel & Hammam

Sleep in a luxury cave carved from tuff — stone walls, terrace fireplace, valley views. End the day with a Turkish hammam in an underground spa.

When to Go

Seasonal guide

Balloons are the main event — flights depend on wind. April–June and September–October give the highest launch rates. April – June: wildflowers, 20°C days, 95% balloon-launch rate. Our favourite. July – August: hot (32°C) and crowded, but early-morning balloons still magical. September – October: grape harvest, crystal skies, best-lit photos of the year. December – February: snow on fairy chimneys — postcard magic, fewer balloon days.
