Muscat & Salalah trips from Amman

Oman is the Gulf at its most graceful — whitewashed forts, dramatic mountain roads and a coastline of turquoise wadis. Muscat is calm and elegant, with the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Royal Opera House and the Mutrah Corniche and souq. In the south, Salalah turns green in the khareef season, roughly from late June to September, when mist, waterfalls and cooler temperatures draw visitors from across the region. Seven days splits naturally between the two, with a short flight in between.

Duration 7 days · 6 nights
Highlights

What you'll see

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

One of the most beautiful mosques in the region: a vast prayer hall, a hand-woven carpet and a crystal chandelier.

Mutrah Corniche & Souq

Frankincense, silver and Omani halwa in one of the oldest markets in Arabia, then the harbour at sunset.

Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole

Emerald pools and a swim into a cave, then the turquoise sinkhole on the coast road to Sur.

Nizwa Fort & souq

A day inland to the great round tower of Nizwa Fort and its traditional souq.

Salalah in the khareef

Misty green hills, waterfalls at Wadi Darbat and Ayn Athum, and camels grazing on the grass.

Al Mughsail Beach & blowholes

Cliffs, sea spray bursting from the blowholes and a long white beach west of Salalah.

When to Go

Seasonal guide

Muscat: October – April is best, warm and sunny; May – September is very hot. Salalah: the khareef, roughly late June to September, brings mist, drizzle and green hills — the classic time for Jordanian and Gulf families. A summer trip centres on Salalah with a short Muscat stay; a winter trip does the reverse, adding desert camps and mountain drives. Eid holidays during the khareef are peak dates, so book early.
